Organized by the HTOO Zoos & Gardens Business Unit, the 8th “Animal Behavior and Enrichment Workshop” is being held over three days, from April 28 to April 30, 2026, at the Yangon Zoological Garden Training Hall. The workshop is attended by approximately 38 participants, including officials from the Forest Department, administrators and veterinarians from Yangon Zoo, Nay Pyi Taw zoos and Yadanabon Zoo as well as zookeepers and staff. Distinguished international experts from Khao Kheow Open Zoo (Thailand) and global organizations have been invited to share their expertise, including: - Dr. Kevin Theophilus Lazarus (First Vice President and Secretary of SEAZA; Chairman of MAZPA – Malaysian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria) - Dr. Xin Huo (Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University) Miss Watita Phuttharaksa (Zoologist, Khao Kheow Open Zoo) - Dr. Visit Arsaithamkul (Deputy Chair of the Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee – SEAZA) - Dr. Sumate Kamolnorranath (Consultant, Chiang Mai Night Safari)

The main objective of this workshop is to support the transformation of zoos in Myanmar into international-standard “Conservation Zoos” and to improve animals’ quality of life by better understanding their natural behaviors. The training particularly focuses on practical enrichment techniques that support animals’ mental and physical well-being, creating habitats that closely resemble natural environments, and reducing stress through proper animal care practices. Conducting workshops like this also helps ensure that zoos in Myanmar align with the animal welfare standards set by SEAZA (Southeast Asian Zoos and Aquariums Association). Moreover, preparations are underway for an upcoming international audit in August, during which experts will assess animal welfare and management practices. The HTOO Zoos & Gardens Business Unit is committed to continuously organizing such educational programs and knowledge-sharing initiatives in the future to further development of Animal Welfare and Conservation.
